I decided this morning that it was time to pay the doctor a visit. Actually, it wasn’t my idea, but I realized that I was just going to keep freaking out until I found out exactly what was wrong with me. I drove to the drop-in clinic in Glendale where I’ve been once or twice before. It wasn’t long before I was having my vitals taken by a nurse. My pulse was high. I was nervous. My temperature, which just an hour earlier had registered 101.1 degrees, was now 99.5 degrees. Odd, considering I was sweating through my t-shirt. Did I mention I was a bit nervous?
The doctor was a young blonde woman wearing a truly weird shade of lipstick. Something between a pale pink and violet. I wasn’t sure what to make of it. Anyway, she took my pulse again and asked if I was nervous. I said yes. Then she looked at my throat and diagnosed me not with the flu, but with some sort of throat virus. I asked if she thought a strep test was in order, and she said she would take a throat culture but was going to put me on an antibiotic anyway. So, I went back into the waiting room while she gathered the necessary paperwork for my antibiotic prescription. At one point a nurse called me into the back room again, and tried to surprise me by taking my pulse a third time. I said, “still high?” and he said, “yes,” to which I responded, “still nervous.” When he returned with my prescription, I apologized. He said, “No, your pulse was better that last time. We got it down to 108.”
Really? Down to 108? Jesus Christ…
I’m back home now, sitting in front of the television and trying to relax. I’ve taken the first day’s dosage of my antibiotic. Hopefully I’ll start to feel better soon. In the meantime, please enjoy this incredible Spiritualized concert from their recent Acoustic Mainlines tour. It sounds quite remarkable. According to the band’s website, the new album is going to be much like this, acoustic with an orchestra. Hopefully the next time they roll through town I’ll be able to experience the goodness. This coming April it will be 10 years since I first saw Spiritualized. Man, I’m fucking old.
