Goodbye Yellow Brick Market
By Evan ~ January 2nd, 2008. Filed under: daily life.
Before I begin, let us share a brief moment of silence for the yellow market down the road, which has just been forced closed by the Department of Health. There I was, walking down the Ave. this morning with a pocketful of change and my mind set on a delicious soda pop, when all of a sudden I spied two women standing outside the market. I walked up cautiously, noticed once of them tearing apart the previous health inspection grade (it was an “A”), and watched in horror as the other woman affixed a notice to the door. As they left, I moved in closer to see what was going on, and read silently about the “rodent harborage and infestation” that led to this depressing shutdown. The little Asian man who runs the market was standing inside the door talking on his cell phone, and when he saw me standing outside he walked over and said, “Sorry…sorry…” I was speechless. I walked away. Apparently the brown market further down the road will be closing soon too, as their rent was just tripled by their landlord. Great, now I’ve got nowhere to go when I’m suffering through caffeine withdrawal. Thanks a lot, Department of Health. Of course, this should make it much easier for me to achieve my goal of not consuming any soda for a week.
I’m not going to lie. I’m kind of excited for the Watchmen movie again. After some initial hesitation about the transformation from graphic novel into feature length motion picture, I feel like I’m back on-board, expecting to be impressed by the film. The reason for this change-of-heart? A brief conversation on Christmas with Phoebe’s father (who had just received the paperback as a gift), and two recent missives from Dave Gibbons (illustrator) on the official website have got me all geeked-out like a pizza-faced high school comic book dweeb. Like the kid from the story reading Tales of the Black Freighter, or something.
Look at that shit, it’s awesome. The production design is probably going to be as good if not better than that of Idiocracy. Speaking of which, I just got a letter in the mail from Blockbuster telling me I never returned Idiocracy, which is a flat-out lie, because I remember I had to drive there twice after realizing that I left the DVD in the DVD player. I guess I’m not going to be shopping at Blockbuster again any time soon.
I received a really nice e-mail from someone today asking about procuring a copy of the Evergreen album Go Kart Ride, which was originally released on cassette only in by Self Destruct Records. I had a copy that has since been lost, so I can’t currently help the person, but if anyone out there downloaded the digitized version of the album that I posted in April of ‘06, I would be most appreciative if you could send me an e-mail so that I could re-acquire it. Thanks!
