Feast Your Eyes On These

There are two videos I’d like to talk about today. That’s all I’ve got, really. I’ll try to at least make my commentary wordy and intelligent, to make up for the fact that I am relying on outside sources for this content. Both of the following came up in conversation this afternoon while I was hanging out in Echo Park with Steve and Nick. I think we spent much more time debating the first one, while I only brought up the second one in passing. Either way, please enjoy and by all means, share any reactions. Don’t just copy this URL and paste it into the body of a message board post somewhere, like this guy did.
This is a story about how charges against 22 potential child molesters have been dropped related to the show “How To Catch A Predator,” which has become something of a go-to topic on this website of mine in recent months. It would have been 23 dropped charges, but the last guy decided to shoot himself in the head just as the camera crews and police officers were breaking into his house. No, I’m not kidding. Watch the video. It’s deplorable. I’ve spoken at length about what I feel is unethical — and perhaps illegal — behavior on the part of NBC and Perverted Justice, so the non-convictions do not surprise me. The fact that it led a man — who may have been innocent — to commit suicide, is what angers me. Who knows, maybe he was a child molester who belonged in prison. I have no way of knowing if this is the case. The fact that NBC was implicit in his death should sound the death knell of this style of “investigative journalism” desensitized American audiences perceive as entertainment. Everything about this program makes me ill, and the fact that it stayed on the air for any period of time whatsoever makes me question the sanity of a very large percentage of our population.
The second video is the original promotional commercial for the 2012 Olympics in London. If you haven’t heard about this, it had to be pulled off the air because people were suffering seizures while watching it. No joke. You have to see it in order to grasp the sheer stupidity of whoever created it. I would go so far as to state that this commercial proves beyond any reasonable doubt that there are people in this world who suffer from profound mental retardation and are still paid lots of money by giant corporations to handle sensitive matters such as advertising campaigns for one of the most popular (if not the most popular) sporting events in the entire world. Jesus Christ. What the fuck!? Seriously. What. The. Fuck.
