Will Ferrell For Food

Which do you think is worse? This, or this. Trying to answer such a dubious question is like trying to choose between having your foot amputated or having your hand amputated. New movies such as these are anathema. How on earth a terrible Beatles-aping movie with a plot tailored for ‘boomers was ever green-lit is beyond me. What’s more, how any movie with Will Ferrell ever finds release speaks to the sub-intelligence of those inside the film industry as well as the movie-going public.

One-Trick Pony

Will Ferrell. I don’t know why someone so insignificant raises my ire. Can it be that he’s just incredibly unfunny, and Ias a arbiter of humortake offense to his riches and popularity? Yes. Yes it can.

Look at the guy’s body of work. He was on SNL in an era ridden with horrible sketches. He then acted in a spin-off of one of the all-time worst SNL sketches, A Night At The Roxbury. He was palatable in Old School as an idiot middle-aged frat brother. Then he was a stupid middle-aged elf in Elf, a stupid newsman in Anchorman (one of the worst movies in recent memory), a stupid middle-aged pussyhound in the only scene devoid of laughs in Wedding Crashers, a stupid racecar driver in Talladega Nights, and now a stupid ice skater in Blades of Glory. Talk about a linear career path. Talk about a lack of artistry or originality. Just give the guy a new wig and maybe a mustache, and he can play any number of stupid, middle-aged roles! And yet, the guy nixed a 29-million dollar offer to star in Elf 2, because he didn’t want to take criticism for being a money-hungry sell-out. Yet he’ll rehash his Anchorman character twice in films that differ only in title and his character’s off-beat job. At his best, Will Ferrell is percentage points ahead of Rob Schneider (and behind Clint Howard) at the very bottom of my favorite actors list.
